“A VOICE FOR THE SILENT VOICES”
Making a
Difference
It’s the action, not the fruit of the action that’s important. You have to do the right thing...You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no results. (Gandhi)
What Will Matter
Ready or not, some day it will all
come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no days, no hours or minutes.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten,
will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments,
frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.
So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will all expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Your gender, skin color, ethnicity will be irrelevant.
So what will matter?
How will the value of your days be measured?
* * *
What will matter is not what you
bought, but what you built;
not what you got, but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage and sacrifice
that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your
competence, but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew,
but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone..
What will matter is not your memories, but the memories of those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't
happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.
~ by Michael Josephson ~

A Puppy's Prayer
Now I lay me down to sleep
The king-size bed is soft and deep
I sleep right in the center groove
My human being can hardly move!
I' ve trapped her legs, she's tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and "I want food!"
I sneak up slowly to begin
My nibbles on my human's chin.
She wakes up quickly,
I have sharp teeth-
I'm a puppy, don't you see?
For the morning's here and it's time to play
I always seem to get my way.
So thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs and holds me tight
And shares my bed with me at night!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas
By Stacey Vincent
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
With no thought of the dog filling their head.
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Knew he was cold, but didn't care about that.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Clause - with eyes full of tears.
He unchained the dog, once so lively and quick,
Last years Christmas present, now painfully thin and sick..
More rapid than eagles he called the dogs name.
And the dog ran to him, despite all his pain;
"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Let's find this dog a home where he'll be loved by all"
I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year,
For Santa Clause had made one thing quite clear,
The gift of a dog is not just for the season,
We had gotten the pup for all the wrong reasons.
In our haste to think of the kids a gift
There was one important thing that we missed.
A dog should be family, and cared for the same
You don't give a gift, then put it on a chain.
And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight,
"You weren't giving a gift! You were giving a life!"
This is the sum of duty: do naught to others which if done to thee,
would cause pain.

NO TIME TO TEACH NEW TRICKS? ADOPT A SENIOR PET!
Saturday marks the start of something big--the first-ever Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month, sponsored by the ASPCA and Petfinder.com. Sure, puppies and kittens are cute as pie, but this November, we'll take time to celebrate the finer things in life--canine and feline senior citizens who come already trained and all ready for another chance at a good life.
"Older pets have plenty to offer adopters--not the least of which is love," says the ASPCA's Jacque Schultz, Companion Animal Programs Advisor. "Instead of passing them by in the shelter, stop for a cuddle and you may find the most wonderful companion possible." And just think, that great big sweetie who's reached his golden years comes complete with the following benefits:

Brother Helping Brother
How it grieves me to see
the infighting among and between
different animal organizations can be.
The fight for power
some can’t let go,
and the animals’ voices are muffled
because of inflated egos.
Brothers helping brothers,
that is the way it should be.
Not, I am more important then you,
and you are not equal to me.
Because when we are striving
to inflate our ego,
the animals at the shelter’s voice will be muffled
and they will get the final death blow.
Move through the power of love,
and not through the love of power,
brother helping brother, and you will see,
a happier person
you and all you touch will be.

Don't Quit
When things go wrong, as they
sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with it's twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worse,
That you must not quit.

existence of man. On the contrary, all the other beings too have been intended

A Dream or a Vision
I had a dream the other night;
it was clear as could be.
Here in our region, a "No Kill shelter,"
I could vividly see.
Citizens visited and supported it,
near and far away.
Animals who once moved with hopelessness,
with thanks did silently pray.
Dogs’ tails were wagging
cats were purring
and other types of life forms,
I did see.
And then, within my sight,
a calendar appeared
and the year was two thousand and three.
Was this a dream or a vision
only time will tell?
But, if it becomes reality,
it will serve our animals and mankind well.

Interesting Statistics
According to a survey of 1,000 pet owners, 39 percent of dogs are obtained from family, friends, and neighbors, another 25 per cent come from breeder and 15 per cent from an animal shelter.
Eight percent of Americans buy their pups from a pet store, five percent are picked up as strays and 2 percent from a local rescue group.

Many Abandoned Animals Die in Taxpayer-Funded Gas Chambers
RICHMOND, Va. - Mary Ellison remembers the scene vividly:
Several dogs were placed in a chest freezer converted to a gas chamber.
The lid with a viewing window was closed and the carbon monoxide chamber was turned on. "There was a lot of barking, growling, crying, beating on the door trying to get out" as they were poisoned, the animal control officer said.
The animals were at a public pound, Ellison visited in Virginia eight years ago.
Today, carbon monoxide chambers-some of them jerry-built metal boxes-are still widely used in the United States to kill unwanted animals, most of them strays picked up by animal control. Many localities refuse to allow the public or press to watch gassing, even in Virginia, which permits press and public witnesses for human execution.
Chesterfield and Henrico counties in suburban, Richmond rejected a reporter’s recent request to view the use of the gas chambers. A week later Henrico, citing longtime pressure from animal right groups, switched to lethal injection of sodium pentobarbital.
Police Maj. Warner W. Williams said Chesterfield favor gas because sodium pentobarbital is a controlled substance that must be kept locked up. It requires two people to use, one to restrain the animal and one to give the injection, and there is the possibility of an accidental needle stick, he said.
Most animal welfare groups and the American Veterinary Medical Association recommend intravenous injection of sodium pentobarbital for the euthanasia of companion animals. The drug, used by most private shelter and veterinarians, produce rapid anesthesia and death.
Gassing is "like a dark, dirty secret that no one wants exposed," said Jeanne Bridgforth, an animal welfare activist who launched a campaign last month to rid Virginia of its 26 gas chambers. Even though killings are performed at taxpayer expense, the public pounds are "doing something they don’t want anyone else to see," she said.
The Humane Society of the United States estimate 4 million to 5 million unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized annually in the United States, but it has no breakdown by method.
At least three states - California, Maryland and Tennessee - have banned carbon monoxide gassing.
"The easier that an animal can transition to death is helpful psychologically, to people and animals," said Tennessee’s state veterinarian, Dr. Ronald Wilson.
Tennessee had another reason for banning gas chambers: An employee of an animal shelter in Chattanooga died in March 2000 after being overcome by carbon monoxide used to euthanize dogs. Officials said the man apparently failed to clear out the gas out of the chambers.
The American Veterinary Medical association says carbon monoxide "is extremely flammable and explosive."
Typed verbatim from The Register-Herald, Monday, June 17, 2002. Reporter, Bill Baskervill, Associated Press Writer.
An animal shelter at its best is fighting a losing battle concerning the euthanasia of our unwanted companion pets. That America has a love affair with these companion pets is unquestionable and "the proof is in the pudding" given the amount of monies we spend to build high class slaughtering houses for our unwanted companion pets. Only until the citizens rise up and demand that their state passes legislation that mandates with penalties if not adhered to that a pet owner must have their pet spayed or neutered, only then will this senseless killing at animal shelters stop.
I have no malice toward an animal shelter if they are sincere in trying to get the pets in their care adopted. But, seeing the plight the animal shelters are given by an over population of unwanted pets, I do believe that legislation by the state that mandates pet owners to have their pet spayed or neutered is a must, and if not that, then "No Kill Shelters" need to emerge in the FRSW region and else place in the United States. I Am a Life
No, I am not a puppy or a kitten
anymore
that you so eagerly welcomed to your door.
Please don’t discard me like a toy
for I still yearn to live, love and be loved.
Just like you,
I am a life!
I am really no different then you.
All the emotions you have,
I have too.
Joy, fear, despair, loneliness, sadness,
are just a few.
Yet, I still yearn to live, love and be loved.
Just like you,
I am a life!
When you return home
I’ll still wait for you,
greeting you with happiness
like I always did do.
And when you go to sleep
I’ll still lie at the foot of your bed,
waiting for you to awake
to pat my head.
I still yearn to live, love and be loved.
Just like you,
I am a life!
No, I am not a puppy or a kitten
anymore
that you so eagerly welcomed to your door.
Please don’t discard me like a toy
for I still yearn to live, love and be loved.
Just like you,
I am a life!

BUTT PRINTS IN THE SAND
Author: Unknown
One night I had a wondrous
dream,
One set of footprints there was seen,
The footprints of my precious Lord,
But mine was not along the shore.
But then some strange prints appear,
And I asked the Lord, "What have we here?"
Those prints are large and round and neat,
"But Lord, they are too big for feet."
"My child," He said in somber tones,
"For miles I carried you alone.
I challenged you to walk in faith,
But you refused and made me wait."
"You disobeyed, you would not grow,
The walk of faith you would not know,
So I got tired, I got fed up,
And there I dropped you on your butt."
"Because in life, there comes a time,
When one must fight, and one must climb,
When one must rise and take a stand,
Or leave their butt prints in the sand."

A Prayer for Animals
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for
our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them, we ask a heart of compassion,
gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

The Reason for Being
Voice of Voices, hear my plea:
Answer this question, I ask of thee:
"Life in its totality appears to be fruitless,
Why be it at all?"
Then the silent voice within
Guided the hand holding the pen.
Words flowed like a gushing waterfall
Carrying a message, a hope to all.
"As to a ship, you are the mast.
Thy unfurled sails, the wind will blast.
Fear not the course,
For you will see
The billowing waves will carry you
To your destiny.
Cherish the time upon you bestowed
To walk among the living.
Remember the essence of life,
Is not the taking but the giving.
And in that giving,
If one life you have salvaged,
From life's torrential rains.
Rejoice! Thy being has not been in vain.
Yes, you will taste the bitter with
the sweet;
Know the pride of victory, the despair of defeat.
But when thy ship reaches homeward shores,
No more life's answers, will you implore."

A Dog’s Final Yelp
I saw a dog pound truck the other
day,
its distances far from me.
Yet, within that cage, I heard a dog yelp,
screaming, "Please God, please set me free."
You will not yelp much longer,
anymore
for death will soon be yours.
For you have entered a shelter
who knows only how to kill,
and no more.
Citizens, rise up and hold your
shelters accountable
view them not as sacred cows anymore
for within those walls there may be,
the leadership that a sadist would coveted,
and the mentality to kill is all they implore.
Christians, if there be any,
rise up and take a stand,
for you are the voice for the silent voices
and the animals’ fate are in your hand.
A situation does not make you, it just shows what you are.

Our Animal Friends Final Thoughts
I blamed the animal shelter for my plight,
but they say the fault is not theirs.
They say they have done all they could,
but the citizens do not care.
I blame the citizens for my plight,
and much of the fault, I know is theirs.
For if my forefathers had been spayed and neutered,
this pending death I would not bare.
Here in my cubicle in peace I lie;
my inevitable fate, I do not fear.
But, silently grieve for my brethren
as I gaze at their trembling bodies
and their wailing voices of despair I hear.
They are coming after me.

KJV Psalm 23
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still
waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths
of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy
staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence
of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human

I cannot see why the Commissioners in Fayette, Raleigh, Summers, and
Wyoming counties could not join together and equally between them provide the
monies needed to hire one animal shelter coordinator to assist all the animal
shelters in the FRSW region if they so do exist. The coordinator could push the
FRSW shelters’ agenda, acquire donations of monies and food for the shelters,
help the shelters in publicity matters as needed, etc. It would be the best
investment the Commissioners could ever make for our shelters and our animal
friends.

The Internet has become a way of life for many in this age of technology. It is another media that an animal shelter can use to give the animals in their captivity, a "second chance" at life and to get their message across. Through an MSN site, which is free to the Internet user and its format is excellent for animal shelters in regards to posting photos of adoptable pets, it is highly recommended for animal shelters who have no other alternative in making a web site. For a shelter in today's world to have a web site and post an abundance of pet photo to me is of utmost importance.
Too often, those who profess to be the friends of our animal friends are their biggest foes. May an animal shelter deal with their animals with compassion because they are only dealing with children in a different body form.
If an animal shelter operates through the power of love and not through the love of power, fortunate are those animals in their captivity.
I wake up in the morning and I see my dog curled up, sleeping peacefully on the love seat. My mind then drifts at the animals at the animal shelter and what this day may hold for them. Please have your pet spayed or neutered, become responsible pet owners, and assist your animal shelter where assistance is needed and demand changes where changes are needed. You are the "Voice for the Silent Voices," if you will not speak and act in their behalf, who will?.
My heart goes out for many of the care givers of the animal shelters. They are trying to deal with a hopeless situation that an uncaring society has dealt to them. The animal shelters are a mirror of the reflection of our society. If you have not moved to make a difference for our animal friends, then your inaction is the decision you have made.
"Cruelty has cursed the human family for countless ages. It is almost
impossible for one to be cruel to animals and kind to humans. If children are
permitted to be cruel to their pets and other animals, they easily learn to get
the same pleasure from the misery of fellow-humans. Such tendencies can lead to
crime."
~Fred A. McGrand
Adopt from your animal shelters. You will never regret saving a life.
To Ms. Shaggy
I'll never forget that fateful day from the animal shelter,
we rescued you from your grave. One life we saved; ours, you salvaged.
The joys you have given us are indescribable with words.
You've comforted us in our sorrow and loneliness when no one else heard;
and in your childlike innocence and mischievous ways,
you've managed to brighten every day.

you there.

To Shaggy With Love
Through the wooded park we stroll
my little dog and I,
she leads the way;
I follow.
As she dashes from here to there
to see what she can find,
she pauses and waits for me,
when I get to far behind.
Little friend, should you go first
to roam worlds, undefined,
please pause and wait for me,
for I'll not be far behind.
And should my days end before yours,
this pledge I'll make to you:
In spirit, I will not leave your side
until you're called home too.
Side by side,
at last we're together again;
now in the other dimension we know,
we were always closer than friends.
The two now are one
as we were eons before,
and it was just a matter
of walking through that door!

I Didn’t Speak Up
In Germany the Nazis came first for
the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up
because I wasn’t Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t
speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and
I didn’t speak up
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left
to speak up.
