KJV, Proverbs 12: 10 : A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
When my dog of fourteen years passed away after a six-year battle with diabetes, I again went to the animal shelter to adopt another friend. I was not prepared for the sights and sounds I saw there, and the memories still haunt me.
There in cages were frightened dogs, cowered in the back corner of their cage with fear, as though they sensed that death was eminent. I still can hear the mournful wailing piercing sounds of the dogs, and the high pitch cries of the cats as they begged for their freedom. Most likely their ultimate freedom would be death because they would be denied a Second Chance at life by not being adopted and would eventually be euthanized.
Yet, I am haunted by other sights and sounds of abandoned animals. However, these sights and sounds are of those whom irresponsible insensitive pet owners have dropped off, leaving them to fend for themselves at a nearby roadside or in an isolated area.
I still can hear the continuous pitiful meow of the little kitten hiding in the bushes in the wooded area afraid to venture out into the opening. Several days later, as I was walking through the wooded area, I saw the little kitten who had been pleading for help. She was so small that I doubt if she was actually given the chance to be weaned from her mother. You could tell from her almost lifeless body lying in a muddy area that she was dehydrated and that death soon would claim her for his own.
I still can see the little black dog in the vacant lot near the highway going around and around and around in a circle for days in a state of confusion over his abandonment. Even the downpour of rain was not a deterrent. Soon, I discovered his mangled body covered with blood along the side of the road where an automobile had hit him.
The haunting sights and sounds of these abandoned pets have never left my mind and they have driven me to see if someway, somehow, I can make a difference. Man's attitude toward non-human life must change before he can see himself as a civilized society. The abuse that we inflict upon our pets and non -pets are to us like a mirror reflecting the cold-hearted mentality of our society.
The purpose of this web site, and may it always be under beneficial construction, is to give our animal friends, also children of God, a SECOND CHANCE. It is my hope that this site will assist those who are already trying to help our animal friends, that it might serve as a vehicle to get their message across. May they obtain assistance when needed, behavior changes where needed, and inspire others to join their cause. It is my dire hope that this site will encourage you, your school, your organization, and your community to come up with and pursue some solutions to help save our non-human life form friends from the horrendous acts we as a society deal to them. We can and we must make a difference!
Life is precious to the beholder, regardless of the molder. Us thinking it less, does not make it so. Sam Amato
