About Photos
Adding Photos
When wanting to add photos, click, Pictures in the left-hand column. When the page opens, you will see the title of the page is Pictures, then you will see, show albums, Add Photos, and Permissions.
For the page, titled, Pictures, I do not like to add photos there, I prefer to create my own album with a specific reason and add photos there. Although, in that page titled, Pictures, with my Print Shop, I will make two flyers and put them there. The flyer might be of something I would like to convey to the surfer, example, photos of some pets and the message "Please adopt from your animal shelter. You will never regret saving a life." For the title of that photo, I might put "Please Adopt," and in the message box, I might put, "Thank you for your support!" Therefore, I will discuss about the show album section and then you move with the Pictures section later as you wish.
Click show albums, now you are going to see, Create a new album and Permissions.
When you click, Permissions, it will ask, "Who may add, edit, or delete albums and photos in this community?" I put "Only managers may add, edit, or delete albums and photos." Then, I click, Save the changes.
Next, I will click, Create a new album, and this is the only place you should go to Create a new album. Otherwise, you are going to have problems later in managing your site.
Click, Create a new album. For the name of the album, use no more then sixteen characters. Example, Adoptable Dogs. If you use more then sixteen characters for your title, problems could exist later. In Album Description, write what photos will be in this album. Example, These are the adoptable dogs at our shelter. Please visit us and adopt one of our pets.
Next, answer the question, "Who may add, delete or edit a photo in this album?" I put just the manger. After that, click Create Album. You will now see at the top, the title of your album is Adoptable Dogs.
Now it is time to add a photo. Click, Add Photo. More then likely, a page will come up titled, "Install Photo Upload Control." Click, Install to install a special photo-adding tool to your hard disk. A page, Add Photos to "with the name of the album you are in" will appear. Now you are ready to start adding photos. Once you have installed "Photo Upload Control," when you click Add Photos on the album you are working on, the page to add photos will automatically appear.
We are now going to add a photo to the album you have chosen for this project.
Click Add Photos and the appropriate screen will appear. On the left-hand side you will see, Select a folder with photos. I get my photos either from my folder on Desktop or directly from my Floppy disk.
The following directions will be how to insert a photo from
your Folder which is on Desktop
Instructions to get it from the folder on Desktop will be
first. To make a folder for photos on Desktop, go to Desktop, right click
your Mouse, scroll to New and click Folder.
The folder will appear titled, "New Folder." Highlight "New
Folder" in the box, delete, and type in Photos.
Now since we have that, we will go back in adding a photo to your album in the section, Select a folder with photos. In that section, you will see the title of your folder, we will use the title Photos, for this discussion. Click, Photos and all of the photos you have in that folder will appear. Choose the photo you want, and you will see a little box in the left-hand corner, click the little box. To show it has been clicked, it will be framed in a line of blue. At the right-hand corner, you will see the title, Upload Now. Click, Upload Now. Then a screen will appear, Upload Progress and the meter will show how fast it is uploading. After it has uploaded, it will take you to the page where the photo was uploaded.
I have found uploading one photo at a time is the best. Sometimes I will do several, but may have to click, Refresh to get the other photos on the page. If your photo only appears as an icon with no photo, you have two choices. Eventually, hopefully, it will turn into a photo and usually does, but also, I will upload that photo several times until I get the photo and delete the icons of the photo that was to be.
Once you have the photo, you will see at the far right of that photo Edit Title and Delete. If you want to delete that photo which you just put in or any other, just click Delete on the photo you want to delete. A box will appear titled, Are you sure you want to delete this photo. Click Yes, ad the photo will be deleted.
To Edit the Photo, you can either click Edit Photo or even the photo itself. In Photo Title, you can delete what is in there and add what you want and in Photo Description, you can insert a comment about the photo. After you have completed this task, Click Save Changes.
In regards to photos, if you scan your own photo, usually the kilobytes (KB) that made that photo are not many, and ordinarily, it is about 20 KB. But, if you use a digital camera for your photos, the kilobytes can be outrageous, and I have seen them to be easily 240 KB. If you are using a digital camera, get a lower setting for the photo and/or compress the photo. You are allowed so much space in any web site, and a digital photo can take up the space too quickly.
The following directions are how to get a photo from your floppy disk and put it in your album.
Put your floppy disk in the floppy drive. Once you have accessed the album you want to insert a photo in, click Add Photo.
The page, Add Photos to the selective album appears. In the
selection, "Select a folder with the photos," click, My Computer.
Then click 3 ½ Floppy (A:). Then follow the same directions in:
The following directions will be how to insert a photo from
your Folder which is on Desktop.
The following directions explain how to move your photos to different locations within the album.
Open the album where you want to move some of your photos.
For view, you can use "Grid View" or ""List View." I
prefer "List View."
Click the title, Reposition.
You will see all the photos you have with a number beside
each and then a square block below it.
Click the box below the number of the photo you want to move. Then scroll to the top where it says, Move to and move the arrow on the right side of the box where you want the photo to be, then click, Move. Continue rearranging the photos where you want them and after you have completed, click Done. You now will return to your album.
I have explained how to add a photo, edit a photo, and reposition a photo. I mentioned earlier that instead of putting photos in the Picture section, I would prefer to create my own albums and have given instructions in how to do so. For an animal shelter, my albums most likely would be, Adoptable Dogs, Adoptable Cats, and Tidbits. Please remember, the title of an album or a page cannot be more then sixteen characters, in plain words it should only take one line for the title, because if it doesn’t you will most likely not be able to Manage the Page which means you cannot move the pages where you would like.
After creating your albums, when a surfer goes into your site, they will see different folders of each album and can click that album to get the photos within. To get the titles of each album to appear under the title of Pictures on the left-hand side, do the following:
Sign in, click Manage Tools and then click, Manage Page. In Manage Page in the section, Select the page to change, scroll down until you find the albums you have created. Noticed it will not be highlighted, highlight it. Noticed the album is hidden. In the section titled, Hide the page, click the box by that title so the page will be exposed. Now scroll up until you get Location in list and click, Indent, only with albums do I indent. Now go to, Move up until you get it under Pictures or Pet Photos, whatever it may be and then click, Save changes. Now when a person clicks, Pictures, they will see the titles of your albums below it.
The 3 Megabytes (MB) which is free of charge from MSN is not
sufficient enough to post as many photos as we would like. We do not need 30 MB
and therefore, do not prefer to pay $19.95 a year for MB we will never need or
use. What is another alternative?
Go to .Net Passport and get you another passport, but use a
different name or nickname. Then create a new community web site. Instructions
for both of these tasks can be found on the page, "Reaching for the Stars." Now use your original
passport for your web site, and in this regards, making web pages, possibly
putting some graphics on some pages, and I can see no reason why one or two
albums cannot be made with the original passport. One megabyte should almost
cover all your pages and graphics, so you are looking at two megabytes for photo
use and a megabyte should give you at least enough space to post 20 photos, if
not more, if the kilobytes in a photo are not too great.
Now with your second passport, go to your web site, sign in, and click, Pictures and click, show albums. Now you will see, Create a new album, click it. Since you do not have permission to create a new album in the pet site, the .Net Passport will come up and ask you to sign in. Sign in and follow the directions for creating an album. With 3 megabytes you can easily make two or three albums allowing you to post, I would say, at least sixty photos in those two or three albums. Now the catch is that when you want to post photos in those two or three albums you made, you will have to use that secondary passport. You will have to check your Hotmail address at least every 30 days or you will lose it, and you will have to post some photos in either of the two or three albums you have made, every ninety days or you will lose the ability to do so. I try to add photos to my site at least every month just to be sure it is active. If your web site does not show any activity, MSN will delete it, and I have had two deleted way before the ninety days were up.
35MM PHOTOS VERSUS DIGITAL PHOTOS
1.After you have scanned a 35mm photo, if you will highlight the title, then put your mouse on the title of the photo, and right click, you will see "Properties."
2. Scroll to "Properties" and click. Here you will see how many kilobytes (KB) are in that photo.
3. To find the KB in a digital photo, follow the same steps. Highlight the title, place your mouse on the title, right click and scroll to "Properties," and click.
4. Where a 35mm will usually have less then 20KB, a digital photo can easily have 400KB. The larger the KB, the more space it will take and the harder it is to e-mail.
5. Especially with a digital photo, it needs to be
compressed. I always compress a digital photo before e-mailing it or putting it
on the web if the KB are too much.
COMPRESSING PHOTOS
Often a photo has so many kilobytes (KB) that sending or receiving it is difficult. If it is too many KB, I just do not send it, nor will I add it to the web site.
After you have scanned a photo, just highlight its title and at the bottom of your screen you should be able to tell how many KB it is. Also, you can highlight the title, right click, scroll to properties and be able to tell how many KB the photo contains.
With "Smart Saver," which is on my program, you can decrease the KB in the photo and the quality of the photo is not lost. If you have this program or similar, do the following:
1. Highlight the title of the photo.
2. Right click, scroll, and choose "Smart Saver."
3. The photo will appear in the left screen and then in the
right screen. The right side of the photo is the one you will change.
4. Notice below the photo, GIF is highlighted. GIF, I believe
is fine, but I prefer it to be JPEG. I have found when trying to work with a
photo in a different manner, if it is GIF I am unable to do it. MSN photos have
to be either GIF or JPEG. So click JPEG.
5. After that you will see a box further down titled
"Quality" with the numbers "0" to "100."
6. You can bring the number up to make the photo better or
down to lose some KB.
7. I have found changing the number to 40 or 50 to compress
the photo does not effect the quality but does decrease the KB the photo
contains.
8. To decrease the KB of the photo, change the number to a
lower setting. An hour glass will appear to show changes in the photo are taking
place.
9. Then click "Save As." Here you may change the
title if so desired.
10. Then click "Save." The saved photo will have
less kilobytes (KB).
Check it to see.
Highlight the title, right click, go to properties, and see how many KB you have.
OBTAINING A PHOTO YOU WANT FROM THIS ALBUM FOR YOUR OWN USE
1. Locate the thumbnail photo you want and click to enlarge.
2. Put your mouse on the photo and right click.
3. Scroll to where you see "Save Picture As."
4. You will see a screen titled, "Save Picture." In
"File name," you can change the title of that photo. Make sure,
"Save as type" is JPEG , if so possible. You can change the type by
the arrow on the right of the box, "Save as type."
5. Decide where you want to save the photo. I save mine on
the Floppy or in my photo folder which is on the Desktop and seldom save a photo
on my hard drive. Your choice on where to save it is made by clicking the arrow
on the right side of the box, "Save in," and choosing the right
location.
6.. Click, "Save" and the photo is wherever you
decided to save it.
For more help concerning photos, go to your Home Page, though any page will do. Where you see "Home," My Communities," and "Help," , Help. A page will appear on the right-hand side. Titled, "Help." You will see a title, "For help on MSN communities" and a box below it. Type photos and the click Go. Additional information will be given to you concerning photos.
