Manager Tools Pertaining to an MSN Site
(Scroll down to find some facts about Petfinder.org)
In the topics of Creating and Editing a Page and Photos, I have given some instructions in how to use the Manage Tools section. In Manage Tools there are many sections to expound on, but I will only be working with Manage Page, other sections, I feel you can understand how to do them on your own
Once you have clicked, Manage Tools, click, Manage Pages. I will try explaining Manage Pages by the questions and answers format.
How do I move a page up once I have created a page?
In Select the page to change, scroll down until
you find the page and highlight it. Then start clicking, Move
up until you get it where you want and then click, Save Changes.
I want to hide the page.
Find the page in Select the page to change and
highlight it. You will see a title, Hide the page,
click the box on the left and then click Save Changes. To reopen a
page in Hide the Page, click the box on the left that has been hidden and it
will reopen it, then click, Save Changes.
I want to delete the page.
Find the page in Select the page to change and
highlight it and now click, Delete the page. A box will
appear saying are you sure you want to delete the page, click, OK
and then click, Save Changes.
The titles for my pages are more then sixteen characters
which I know should have been, and some of the titles, I have typed incorrectly
and given the wrong description of the page. How do I make this correction?
In Select the page to change, scroll down until
you find the page and highlight it. You will see on the left,
Change the page’s name and Change the page’s description. Go in each box and
make the correction(s) and then click, Save Changes.
I want my albums’ list to be seen under Pictures on the
left-hand side. How?
After creating your albums, when a surfer goes into your
site, they will see different folders of each album and can click that album to
get the photos within. To get the titles of each album to appear under the title
of Pictures on the left-hand side, do the following:
Sign in, click, Manage Tools and then click, Manage Page. In Manage Page in the section, Select the page to change, scroll down until you find the albums you have created. Noticed it will not be highlighted, highlight it. Noticed the album is hidden. In the section titled, Hide the page, click the box by that title so the page will be opened. Now scroll up until you get Location in list and click, Indent, only with albums do I indent. Now go to Move up until you get it under Pictures or Pet Photos, whatever it may be and then click, Save changes. Now when a person clicks Pictures, they will see the titles of your albums below it.
Can many of these maneuvers be done at the same time while in
"Select the page to change" and then click "Save Changes" to
complete all transaction?
Yes
For more help concerning Manager Tools, go to your Home Page, though any page will do. Where you see "Home," My Communities," and "Help," click, Help. A page will appear on the right-hand side, titled "Help." You will see a title, "For help on MSN communities" and a box below it. Type Manager Tools and the click, Go. Additional information will be given to you concerning the section titled Manager Tools.
PETFINDER 'S ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ASKED
Hello,
Around June 2000, I have tried to assist the animal shelters in the Southern WV area vicinity in making a web site to post photos of their pets for adoption. I was very naive concerning making a web site and from what different carriers you could use to do so. Having my own personal web site with MSN, I moved them in that direction. Getting the shelters’ web site known by the public in their area, I quickly saw it to be a task. Had I know what I know now, I would have directed them to Petfinder.org.
I look at Petfinder.org several times a week and am very impressed with the set up of their web site. Some questions I have and hopefully you will answer may help me move these shelters to Petfinder.org.

Hello Sam,
3-8-2003
I'm Charles the Technical Support Manager at Petfinder.com. Your email was sent
to me to answer some of your technical questions. Let me try to handle each
question in turn....
(Please note: I did not send the technician an MSN site, so some of his answers of my concerns may not have been as I would had wanted, but the fault would had been all of my own for not presenting an MSN site. If I have made an error in a question, I have not changed it on this document nor have I made any changes to his document. I am beginning to believe it would be advisable for an animal shelter to move with Petfinder instead of an MSN site. Although, I am not sure how difficult it would be to make a web site from them with multiple pages, one thing I noticed, with Petfinder.org you have 15 MB for your web site and with an MSN web site you have only 3MB, although there is a way around it to get more.)
---------------
1. I realize you have to put the Petfinder’s logo and the 911's logo on the home page so one can access their site. Does that have to be on every page?
1) The only three requirements for members websites is that
a) On the homepage you must keep the Our Pet List link near the top of the page
and the 'Dog House' links at the bottom in some obvious format.
b) You cannot advertise or link to any competitors of Petfinder or any of our
sponsors. (you mention a 911 logo, if you mean pets911.com, they are a
competitor so logos or links to them would not be allowed)
c) Your home page on Petfinder must include enough basic information that the
user's most frequently asked questions about the organization will be answered
without leaving Petfinder hosted space.
2. I realize you have to show your pets for adoption on Petfinder, which I see as no problem. But, with an MSN web site you have to add photos at time or they will delete your site. I would imagine Petfinder would not object a shelter with an MSN site to post photos on their MSN web site such as pets adopted out, photos of activities, etc.?
2) Petfinder offers FTP accounts for members to use to store additional
webpages, graphics, and photos. I am not sure what "add photos at
time" means, but you may store whatever photos you link in an FTP space as
long as they are only for use on your Petfinder hosted webpages. You cannot use
the space to store photos on Petfinder to show on another site. With the
Petfinder FTP account there would be no need to have any webspace anywhere else,
and we do not allow members to simply list pets in the database but not maintain
a page at Petfinder (see c above)
3. When you connect to Petfinder to show the animals you have for adoption, does it have to be Petfinder’s homepage or can it be your homepage on Petfinder?
3) Each Members has their own webpage(s) with a link to their pet list. These
pages can have a Unique Address that goes directly to that page that you can
give out to people, print on flyers, etc. These names look like
noahsark.petfinder.com
4. I noticed Monroe County in WV, seem to have made a web site from Petfinder. Is there a charge for that? It seems like a very complicated site to make. Would not a person have to be very knowledgeable in making a web site to do that? I am familiar with FrontPage and helped one shelter move in that direction, but only in trying to correct the problems she was having. I would be unwilling to help a shelter in making an org or com site, because I just wouldn’t have the time to assist them.
4) Every Petfinder member has their own webpage(s). They can be a simple
single page that is edited via a web page interface, or they can be a complex
website with many pages and graphics, that is up to you. There is Never any
charge for anything Petfinder offers. You can use frontpage to create a plain
html page and upload it if you like, but we do not support the extended
frontpage extensions. We also do not offer domain hosting.
5. I would like the web sites I have helped the shelters make which are MSN to have their URL on Petfinder, yet keep their MSN web site since they are comfortable with it, and maybe that is what I am trying to figure out to a degree how to do it. But, in the same essences, I may be helping two other shelters soon in making a web site and definitely am trying to move them to Petfinder, but with one shelter, I believe a web site of some manner would be justified.
5) As I mention above, we do not allow members to simply list pets in the database but not maintain their page at Petfinder (see c above) Just linking to another site is not allowed.
6. With an MSN site, a page can be no longer then five pages on your word processor. How long can your home page be? Seriously doubt if anyone would take up five pages.
6) We offer a simple web interface to edit a single page, that is the normal Petfinder member homepage. It usually looks similar to this www.okmulgee.petfinder.com
You can then use an FTP account to just store extra graphics and create
something like this..
http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NJ205.html
Or with the same FTP account you can create something like
www.muttsnmore.petfinder.com
The FTP space is 15MB. That is enough space to store many dozens of pages (with
graphics) like the Petfinder homepage (www.petfinder.com).
We don't think you will run out of space. Many of our members have created nice
complex site like the muttsandmore site above. We also allow scripts, etc to be
used so your groups could set up online adoption applications that
people fill out click send and it is emailed to them.
We are not just a petlist and web page host, Petfinder also offers all kinds of
other features, like... free press releases sent to you local media about your
group, a members only message forum so you can communicate with others helping
the little furrys, a library of articles covering every topic you can think of
that is second to none, expert pages for advice from the best award winning
experts from our partner the ASPCA in a variety of fields. How about this..
every pet adopted from a Petfinder member in an approved state (up to 45 and
growing) is covered by two months of ShelterCare Pet Insurance paid by us (there
is no cost or obligation to you or the adopter) thus taking the fear of adopting
a possibly 'sick' shelter/rescue animal off the adopter and lightening the
return load on the group..... AND Petfinder members get 10% off Pet Insurance
for their own pets.
As to your last question of "how to move any more which would really be to
the best interest of the animals", well that one is simple. Come put your
pages and Pets on Petfinder. With millions of visitors a month and many groups
claiming a 50-100% or more increase in adoptions once they signed up with
Petfinder, you just can't go wrong... did I mention it is all Free....no, really
it is, I promise, there is NO fine print here ;o)
Ok, as if that all was not good enough, our partner the ASPCA is giving away
digital cameras to the first 200 groups to sign up starting on Feb 14, 2003. To
be eligible, just sign up and maintain your petlist and homepage by updating it
once a week (which is easy with our web based forms).
If you have any questions about our family (6000 shelters and rescues and
rising) or anything else to do with Petfinder. You can email the outreach dept
at outreach@petfinder.com
Oh, did I mention that once you are a member, you can always reach the Top Notch
Technical Support at help@petfinder.com
with Any technical questions you have. ;o)
Hope to see you as part of the family..
Charles
